The history of the luxury automobile marque known as Lincoln dates back to the 1920s. Henry Leland, who was one of the co-founders of Cadillac, resigned in 1917 to form the Lincoln Motor Company. The company was produced initially to help manufacture Liberty motors during the first World War. After the war, the decision was made to start producing new luxury vehicles. The first Lincoln vehicle was completed in 1920. With some economic trouble, in 1922, the company was sold to the Ford Motor Company. By the mid-twenties, the Lincoln was recognized around the world as a premier vehicle. They were offered with factory and custom-built bodies. Even as a luxury market was dwindling in the 30’s, Lincoln was continuing to produce high-end automobiles. After the second World War, Ford formed the Lincoln-Mercury division where the Lincolns were paired with the mid-range mercury brand. They remained together until 2010, and in 2012, Ford rebranded the Lincoln division under the original name of Lincoln Motor Company. The division continues to produce sedans, crossovers, and SUVs today.
